Samuel P. Huntington and Modern Political Discourse

 

The fourth republican political science conference headed “Samuel P. Huntington and Modern Political Discourse” was held at the Pedagogical University on the initiative of the Department of Political Science and History of Law.

Among the participants of the conference were representatives from the ASPU, the RA Public Administration Academy, the RA International Academic Centre, the RA NAS Institute of Oriental Studies, and the Yerevan State Linguistic University after V. Bryusov.

The Pedagogical University Rector Rouben Mirzakhanyan highlighted the topic of the symposium mentioning that the American sociologist and political scientist, the author of the “Clash of Civilizations” is one of the most outstanding representatives of modern political thought, and his above mentioned theory has a very important role in the development of political thinking.

The ASPU Rector considered the works and articles of the Harvard University Professor up-to-date stressing out the recent political events that were the reflection of manifestation of clash of civilizations.

Furthermore, the Head of the Department of Political Science and History of Law Levon Shirinyan noted in the report on the subject “Role of Huntington in modern political thought” that the Armenian nation has a strong historical thinking, however there is a lack of political thinking in us; whereas a state is first of all formed with political thought.

In addition, Levon Shirinyan introduced the most outstanding political scientist of the 20th century, however mentioning that Huntington is more up-to-date, a leading figure, scientist and a citizen who had a huge role in the state formation of the USA. He not only drafted, analyzed and explained with the rules of chess, but also went deeper into the culturology issues, discovery of the cultural code of states and nations. A lot may be written about Huntington, a lot may be learnt from him; and we as a nation living and creating in the breakthrough of civilizations should understand the Huntington security concept” concluded the speaker.

And last but not least, the participants of the conference discussed Huntington’s projection of the Political Order’ on the example of the RA, the Huntington perspective on Ukraine, the issues of civilization foundations and self-identification of nations, the Huntington identity concept as a ground for modernization of national interests, political freedom of an individual as a guarantee of demographic consolidation, national identity protections trends in the domain of development of the culture of state-formation.
